Answer
Does Starlink work with VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)?
Yes—Starlink can provide the internet connection for a compatible VoIP service. VoIP means Voice over Internet Protocol: calls travel over an internet connection instead of a traditional telephone line. You still need a VoIP provider and compatible phone, app or adapter; buying Starlink does not automatically supply a telephone number.
There are three common ways to connect:
- An IP desk phone or cordless VoIP base station connected to your network.
- A provider's calling app on a phone or computer.
- An analogue telephone adapter approved by the VoIP provider for a compatible traditional handset.
Do not plug an ordinary telephone directly into an Ethernet LAN socket.
Call quality needs stability, not just a high download result. Our recommended trial includes incoming and outgoing calls, a longer conversation and a call while normal household uploads are running. If possible, connect a desk phone or base station by Ethernet to remove weak Wi-Fi from the test. Record one-way audio, delays or dropped calls.
Ask the provider whether its service supports CGNAT. Starlink's default IPv4 connection does not allow ordinary unsolicited inbound connections; a hosted phone service and a self-hosted PBX can therefore have different requirements. Follow the provider's router advice rather than changing SIP settings blindly.
Before moving an existing number, agree the porting process with the provider. Keep suitable backup connectivity and power for the dish, router and phone equipment, and confirm the provider's emergency-calling arrangements. Mobile Wi-Fi Calling is related internet-based calling, but is configured through your mobile carrier rather than a separate VoIP account.
