Questions & answers

Clear, practical answers to the things people want to know before and after choosing Starlink.

Answer

Can I separate smart-home devices from work computers on Starlink?

Yes, if your networking equipment supports the required separation. A capable router, firewall or managed Wi-Fi system can place smart devices on a different network from work computers.

Start by listing which devices must communicate. A phone may need to control a local hub, while a cloud-managed sensor may need only internet access. Blocking all communication without checking those dependencies can break useful functions.

Set up a small test group first. Apply rules that allow the necessary access and block unnecessary access to private computers and management pages. Check the gateway's IPv6 policy as well as IPv4 when both are used.

Test updates, phone control and recovery after a restart before moving every device. Do not assume that calling a Wi-Fi name “IoT” makes it isolated. The network assignment and access policy must do the actual work.
