Questions & answers

Clear, practical answers to the things people want to know before and after choosing Starlink.

Answer

How much PoE power does a Starlink network switch need?

Add up the power requirements of the devices the switch will supply, then check both its total PoE budget and each port's supported output. Having enough Ethernet sockets does not establish that it can power every connected device.

Use the specifications for the actual access points, cameras or phones. Allow for their maximum operating requirements, including functions that may increase demand. Leave reasonable headroom rather than planning exactly at the switch's limit.

Match each device's PoE standard to the supplying port. Treat passive injectors separately: they can apply power without the negotiation used by standards-based PoE, so compatibility must be explicit.

This calculation concerns downstream network devices. Do not plug a Starlink dish or proprietary powered connection into an ordinary PoE switch unless the exact equipment documentation expressly supports it.

After installation, test with all intended devices operating and review the switch's power status.
