Questions & answers

Clear, practical answers to the things people want to know before and after choosing Starlink.

Answer

How do I test Starlink backup internet without disrupting the whole household?

Choose a quiet period and tell anyone using the connection before testing. Save the router configuration and confirm that both internet services work individually.

With a local administrator connection available, use the router's supported method to disable or disconnect only the primary WAN. Watch whether the router detects the loss and moves new traffic to Starlink. Test ordinary browsing and the applications you need during an outage.

Then restore the main service and observe the return behaviour. Some active sessions may need reconnecting because their internet path changes; record that rather than assuming the test failed completely.

Check the settings for detecting failures and returning to the primary line. A cable-unplug test proves one scenario but may not reproduce an upstream outage where the Ethernet link stays up. Follow your router's guidance for testing that case too, and restore the normal configuration before finishing.
