Questions & answers

Clear, practical answers to the things people want to know before and after choosing Starlink.

Answer

Can I use Starlink on a boat or offshore?

Check the exact water location, vessel use, plan and hardware. Permission for land-based travel does not automatically cover a boat at sea.

Before relying on it, confirm:

  • Whether use is on inland water, territorial water or the open ocean.
  • Whether the vessel is stationary or moving.
  • Whether the activity is personal or commercial.
  • What the plan permits for that vessel and location.
  • Whether an ocean-data option is required and how it is billed.
  • Whether the hardware and installation suit the marine environment.

Current Starlink descriptions distinguish these uses and include separate conditions for Personal Maritime and ocean data. Do not infer eligibility from the word “Roam” or a successful test beside the shore.

Ask a competent marine installer about mounting, corrosion exposure and power arrangements. Keep the system separate from required distress, navigation and safety equipment.

Our recommendation is to obtain a clear plan confirmation before departure and maintain appropriate alternatives. Internet connectivity must not be treated as a safety-of-life service.
