Answer
How do I estimate battery runtime for Starlink in a campervan?
Estimate runtime from usable energy and the measured load of the whole setup. A battery's advertised capacity alone is not enough.
A useful approximation is:
Runtime in hours = usable battery energy in Wh × conversion efficiency ÷ average load in W.
For example, if 500 Wh is available before conversion, an inverter is 85% efficient and the load averages 50 W, the estimate is 8.5 hours. These are illustrative assumptions, not a promised runtime.
Avoid counting losses twice if the battery maker already quotes usable output energy. Subtract the energy needed for other devices and retain a reserve.
Measure the actual terminal, router and accessories during a realistic session. Check both the power source's continuous output and the equipment's input requirements; average consumption does not establish electrical compatibility.
Cold weather, battery condition and changing load can reduce practical runtime. Our recommendation is to test the complete system before travel and keep an alternative for essential communications.
