Questions & answers

Clear, practical answers to the things people want to know before and after choosing Starlink.

Answer

Which devices must stay powered for Starlink backup internet to work?

Power every essential part of the connection path. Depending on your installation, that can include the dish, its supply, the main router, an Ethernet switch and the access point serving your device.

A battery-backed dish is little help if the Wi-Fi access point loses power. Likewise, a working network cannot keep a desktop computer or a cordless-phone base running if those devices have no power.

List the few tasks that matter during the outage and trace the equipment each task uses. Measure that complete load rather than relying on the dish's figure alone. Leave non-essential network equipment out of the emergency arrangement where practical.

Test a controlled power interruption locally and confirm the actual task works, not just that indicator lights remain on. Record the runtime and a shutdown point. Backup power does not remove the need for another communication option during a wider service interruption.
