Questions & answers

Clear, practical answers to the things people want to know before and after choosing Starlink.

Answer

Will a VPN between two Starlink homes make file transfers as fast as downloads?

Usually the sending site's upload is an important limit. A fast download test at the receiving property does not mean the other property can send files at that rate.

Check each site's local connection first, then try one representative file across the VPN. Other limits can include wireless coverage, the source drive, the receiving device, encryption processing and the route used by the VPN service.

For an approximate planning calculation, a 1 GB file contains about 8 gigabits. At a sustained 20 Mbps transfer rate, the idealised transfer takes roughly 400 seconds before additional overhead or interruptions. Real results can be slower and rates can change.

Schedule large backups away from important calls and consider incremental transfers that send only changed data. Compare the same file and device arrangement when testing changes. Buying a faster receiving router will not overcome a consistently slower upload at the sending end.
