Questions & answers

Clear, practical answers to the things people want to know before and after choosing Starlink.

Answer

Should my extra Starlink Wi-Fi unit use router mode or access-point mode?

Use access-point mode when the existing router should continue managing your network and the extra unit is simply adding Wi-Fi coverage. Use router mode when that unit is deliberately taking responsibility for routing and local network services.

Connecting an additional router in its default router mode can create a second private network. Browsing may work while printers, casting or other local services become harder to reach.

Before changing modes, check which device currently assigns addresses and which one provides the features you need. Some guest or filtering features differ by operating mode. Follow the extra unit's instructions rather than assuming every brand uses the same port layout.

After setup, test a wired device, a wireless device and one local service. If you want the new unit to replace Starlink's routing role, plan the kit-specific Ethernet and bypass arrangement separately. Keep the original setup documented until the new layout is proven.
