Questions & answers

Clear, practical answers to the things people want to know before and after choosing Starlink.

Answer

What is the difference between failover and bonding for Starlink?

Failover changes to another internet connection when the preferred one fails. Bonding combines multiple connections through a compatible system, often using a tunnel to a remote endpoint. They solve related but different problems.

Ordinary failover may restore browsing but interrupt an active call or VPN session. Bonding systems can also include session-preserving failover or packet duplication to improve continuity. These features depend on the product and configuration; two subscriptions alone do not provide them.

Before buying, write down the requirement: recovering internet within a tolerable interval, keeping a call connected, increasing usable throughput, or coping with brief packet loss. Ask the supplier to demonstrate that requirement with your applications.

Include the mobile data allowance, equipment, subscription or tunnel service, power supply and usable signal in the comparison. Test with a non-essential call while deliberately removing one link.
