Starlink Upload Speed Slow? A Practical Troubleshooting Guide

A Starlink connection can feel fast for browsing and streaming while uploads crawl, fluctuate or fail. That matters when you send large files, back up photos, publish video, use cloud storage or join a call with your camera on.

Upload performance naturally varies, so one low result is not enough to diagnose a fault. The practical goal is to find out whether the limit is the device, local Wi-Fi, household traffic, the application you are using or the Starlink connection itself.

Before you test

Prepare a simple test setup:

  • Use one laptop or desktop with no active VPN.
  • Pause cloud sync, photo backup, game updates and large transfers on other devices.
  • Note the time and weather.
  • Open the Starlink app and check for an active outage, obstruction events or another warning.
  • Keep a short record of each result rather than relying on memory.

Do not repeatedly restart the system between tests. First collect a clean baseline.

1. Confirm that the problem is really upload speed

Run two or three speed tests several minutes apart. Record download speed, upload speed and latency, but pay most attention to the upload result and whether it changes sharply between tests.

Then try one real task, such as uploading the same medium-sized file to a trusted cloud service. A speed test and a real upload measure different paths, so agreement between them is useful evidence.

If only one website or app is slow while other uploads work normally, the destination service, its route or its software may be the bottleneck. If every upload is slow, continue with the network checks.

2. Compare your normal location with a near-router test

Weak or busy Wi-Fi can damage upload performance before traffic ever reaches the dish. Test the same device in its normal position, then move close to the Starlink router and repeat the same test.

Keep the comparison fair:

  • Use the same device and test service.
  • Test within a few minutes.
  • Do not change several settings at once.
  • If your setup supports Ethernet, repeat the test with a wired connection.

A large improvement near the router or over Ethernet points to local Wi-Fi coverage, interference or congestion. Moving the router into the open, reducing distance or improving the Wi-Fi layout is more relevant than changing the Starlink plan.

3. Stop hidden uploads on the network

Upload capacity is shared by every device. A phone backing up photos, a computer syncing folders, a security camera sending video or a console saving game data can consume much of it without an obvious warning.

Temporarily pause:

  • Cloud-drive and photo-library sync
  • Online backup software
  • Security-camera cloud recording
  • Large email attachments
  • Video publishing or livestreaming
  • File sharing from another computer

Run the same test again. If performance recovers, re-enable services one at a time. Schedule large backups for quieter periods and avoid starting several upload-heavy jobs together.

4. Check whether obstructions or short interruptions are breaking the upload

An upload may appear merely slow when it is actually stopping and retrying. In the Starlink app, review recent obstruction and outage information around the time of the failed transfer.

Look for a pattern rather than a single brief event. Repeated interruptions can be especially noticeable during long uploads, live video or calls because those tasks need a continuous path.

If obstructions line up with the problem, use the app's obstruction guidance to assess the dish location. Do not climb onto a roof or move a mounted dish unless you can do so safely. A qualified installer is the sensible option for high or difficult locations.

5. Test at two different times

Network demand can change through the day. Repeat the same controlled test at a quieter time and again when the problem normally occurs.

Use the same device, location and test service. A consistent time-of-day pattern suggests shared network demand or scheduled activity in your own home. Check both possibilities before assuming the equipment is faulty.

Avoid drawing a conclusion from a single excellent early-morning result or one poor evening result. A small set of repeatable comparisons is more useful.

6. Separate application limits from connection limits

Some services limit upload rates, process files after receiving them or behave differently with large numbers of small files. Security software and VPNs can also change the path or add processing overhead.

Try these comparisons:

  1. Upload one ordinary file to a second trusted service.
  2. Test with the VPN disconnected, if policy allows.
  3. Try a second device on the same network.
  4. Use a different browser or the service's official app.
  5. Check whether the service reports an incident.

If one device is slow but another is not, focus on that device, its software and Wi-Fi connection. If one service is slow but others are normal, contact that service rather than changing Starlink hardware.

7. Restart only after you have a baseline

If uploads are slow across multiple devices and services, the app shows no clear outage and Wi-Fi has been ruled out, perform one deliberate restart using the normal Starlink app controls or the instructions for your hardware.

Allow the system to reconnect fully, then repeat the same test once. Repeated power cycling can waste time and make the evidence harder to interpret.

Do not factory-reset the router as an early troubleshooting step. A factory reset can remove network settings and is unlikely to solve a destination-specific upload problem.

When to contact support

Contact Starlink support when slow or failed uploads persist across multiple devices, applications and times after you have ruled out local Wi-Fi and household traffic.

Include:

  • Dates, times and your general region
  • Several upload results, not only the worst one
  • Whether download speed and latency also changed
  • Whether Ethernet or a near-router test made a difference
  • Any app warnings, obstruction events or outages
  • Whether multiple devices and upload destinations are affected
  • The troubleshooting steps already completed

Do not include account passwords, recovery codes or private files. Use filenames or file sizes in your notes rather than sharing confidential content.

Quick diagnosis

  • Better near the router or over Ethernet: improve the Wi-Fi path.
  • Better after pausing backups or cameras: schedule or reduce competing uploads.
  • Slow in only one app or website: investigate that service or software.
  • Slow on only one device: focus on the device, VPN, browser or security software.
  • Repeated interruptions in the Starlink app: investigate obstructions, power, cable condition or service events.
  • Slow across devices, services and times: collect evidence and contact Starlink support.

The best upload-speed diagnosis is a series of controlled comparisons. Change one variable at a time, record the result and fix the part of the path that the evidence actually identifies.
