Why does my VPN make Starlink slow or unstable?
A VPN adds another network destination and processing layer. The useful test is whether the problem follows that change, rather than assuming either the VPN or Starlink must be at fault.
If you are authorised to change the VPN state, compare the same device and location with and without it. Use a harmless test that does not expose confidential work traffic. Also compare near the router or over Ethernet where practical.
Record:
- VPN provider or workplace gateway.
- Server location and protocol, if visible.
- Time of day.
- Which applications fail.
- Whether the ordinary connection remains healthy.
For a personally managed VPN, try a supported nearby server and repeat the comparison. For a company device, give the evidence to IT; do not remove endpoint protection or install an unapproved alternative.
Our recommendation is to diagnose the local connection first, then the VPN path. A VPN cannot cure dish obstructions or weak Wi-Fi, and a router reset will not repair a busy remote gateway.
