Starlink Slow Ethernet Speeds: How to Fix it

This practical Starlink troubleshooting video covers Starlink Slow Ethernet Speeds: How to Fix it and offers clear guidance for diagnosing the issue. Starlink Tips practical notes: Separate the cable's negotiated link speed from the internet speed-test result. Check each part of the path, including adapters, docks, switches and the endpoint, and compare with a short known-good connection where appropriate. Add one component back at a time. The related Ethernet questions explain why an older switch or link can limit throughput and why a generic switch belongs on the local network side, not in the powered dish connection. For further reading, open the related Q&As below; each links to a fuller guide. Get One Month of Starlink Free: use the “Claim Your Free Month” referral button beneath the player. Questions about this video

Straight answers to the questions readers ask most often.

Why does Starlink Wi-Fi work but my Ethernet connection does not?

If Wi-Fi devices can browse normally, the satellite connection is probably working. Concentrate first on the wired path: the LAN port or compatible adapter, cable, switch, dock and the affected device.

Try a simple comparison:

  1. Connect one device through the shortest supported wired path.
  2. Temporarily remove optional switches, wall cabling or docks where practical.
  3. Compare a known-working cable.
  4. Test a second wired device if available.
  5. Check whether the device reports a physical Ethernet link and a network address.

A link light does not prove that addressing or internet access is correct, but no physical link makes DNS changes an unhelpful first step.

If a direct connection works and the normal arrangement does not, reconnect the intermediate components one at a time. That narrows the fault without resetting the whole system.

Do not connect a computer to a dish-power port simply because a plug appears to fit. Identify the hardware and use the documented LAN connection.

Can I add an Ethernet switch to my Starlink router?

You can use a suitable Ethernet switch to add LAN connections where your Starlink setup provides a supported Ethernet output. Some kits have built-in LAN ports; others require the matching adapter.

Connect the switch to the LAN side of the router that manages your home network. Do not insert a generic switch into the powered dish-cable connection. Identify the hardware and ports from the relevant diagram first.

Our buying checklist is to match the switch's port speeds to your needs, allow enough ports for the uplink and devices, and check its power supply and placement. An older 100 Mbps switch can limit a faster local path.

For a simple household setup, avoid changing VLAN or advanced settings unless you have a reason. Add and test one wired device at a time. A switch provides more connections; it does not multiply the internet speed supplied to the property.

Why is Starlink limited to about 100 Mbps over Ethernet?

A wired result close to 100 Mbps can indicate a 100 Mbps Ethernet link somewhere in the path, although it is not proof on its own. The service plan or wider connection may also limit performance.

Check the negotiated link speed on the computer and the specifications of the switch, dock or adapter. Our comparison is to connect through the shortest supported LAN path with a known-working cable, then reintroduce intermediate equipment one item at a time.

An old switch or faulty cable can become the bottleneck even if the rest of the network supports gigabit Ethernet. Compare with Starlink's router-to-internet test where available.

Do not force an unsupported speed or duplex setting as a shortcut. Identify and replace the limiting component only after testing. A faster Ethernet link also does not guarantee that the internet subscription will deliver that same rate.
