#164 Starlink Mini Review - Key Learnings for Remote work and Microsoft Teams

Timber Time Outdoors shares practical lessons from using Starlink Mini for remote work and Microsoft Teams. Starlink Tips viewing notes: Use this remote-work experience as a starting point for your own acceptance test. Try incoming and outgoing calls, a longer meeting and a session during your normal busy period. Keep the same device and application when comparing Wi-Fi with Ethernet, and note app events at the time of any interruption. A good download result alone does not establish clear two-way audio. Questions about this video

Straight answers to the questions readers ask most often.

Is Starlink suitable for video calls and online gaming?

Starlink can support video calls and online gaming, but the experience depends on connection stability as well as speed. A high download result does not show whether a long meeting or a latency-sensitive game will run smoothly.

Starlink's engineering explanation identifies latency as the time taken for data to travel out and a response to return. It also explains that network routing, shared radio capacity and processing can affect that delay. Historical figures in that report are not a promise of current performance at your address.

For a useful assessment:

  1. Try your actual applications. Run the meeting software or games you normally use, including during busy household periods.
  2. Separate Wi-Fi from the internet connection. Compare your normal location with a position close to the router, or use Ethernet where your hardware supports it.
  3. Test uploads as well as downloads. Note what happens during a cloud backup or large file transfer, then repeat with that activity paused.
  4. Record interruptions. Check the Starlink app around the same time; a speed test taken later may miss the problem.
  5. Plan for important sessions. If you depend on calls for work, test a backup connection and know how to switch to it.

A buffered film and a live conversation can feel very different on the same connection. Judge suitability using the tasks that matter to you.

Can I keep my phone number when switching to Starlink?

Often, yes. Moving your existing number to a separate VoIP provider can let you keep a familiar home phone number while Starlink supplies the internet connection. The receiving provider must confirm that it can port your particular number; Starlink does not automatically take over the telephone service.

What to check before ordering

Ask the receiving phone provider to check eligibility, account details, the transfer date and any effect on bundled broadband. Keep the existing service active until the agreed migration process says otherwise. Cancelling independently can complicate a transfer.

For an older UK broadband service carried over the telephone line, porting the number may also cease that broadband. Confirm the sequence with both providers and test Starlink before relying on it.

Our practical recommendation is to trial the VoIP service with a temporary number, check incoming and outgoing calls, then arrange the port. Confirm voicemail, call forwarding and emergency-calling arrangements separately. The related remote-work video provides connectivity context; it is not a number-porting tutorial.

Why can the other person hear me on a Starlink VoIP call, but I cannot hear them?

One-way audio can originate in the phone or computer, its selected audio device, or the network path used by the VoIP service. Start with the simple checks: speaker volume, headset connection, the selected output device and microphone permissions. Ask the other person to check their mute control too.

Try the provider's supported app or another handset, then make a call on a different internet connection if available. Note whether incoming and outgoing calls behave differently. A problem limited to one device points towards its setup; a repeatable difference between networks warrants provider-led network checks.

Give the VoIP provider the handset and router models, call time and test results. Follow settings specific to that service. Do not disable the firewall or copy generic port-forwarding instructions, particularly where carrier-grade NAT is involved.

If audio is choppy in both directions rather than completely absent in one, use our call-dropout guide to check Wi-Fi, obstructions and busy uploads.
