FTTC vs Starlink: When Starlink Is Better Than Copper Broadband
If your broadband is described as fibre to the cabinet (FTTC), the word fibre can make it sound like you have a full-fibre connection. You may not.
With FTTC, fibre optic cable runs to the green cabinet in your street. The final connection from that cabinet to your home normally still travels over copper. If you have older ADSL or standard copper broadband, the copper section can run much farther, from your home all the way back to the exchange.
That final copper section can be the weak link.
For some homes, a good FTTC line is perfectly usable. For others, especially rural homes with a long line, low upload speed, frequent faults or no realistic prospect of full fibre, Starlink can be a better way to get online.
This guide explains the difference, the real trade-offs and how to decide without relying on a headline speed.
Short answer: Starlink is most attractive when your current copper-based connection is slow, unstable or difficult to improve, and you have a clear view of the sky. It is not automatically better than a healthy FTTC line, and full fibre should normally be compared first wherever it is available.

The important difference: where does the copper end?
Standard copper broadband
Standard copper broadband, usually called ADSL, uses a traditional copper telephone line for the whole route between your home and the exchange.
Openreach currently describes standard copper broadband as offering download speeds of up to 21 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 1 Mbps, although the speed at an individual property can be lower. The longer the copper line, the greater the potential signal loss.
This type of connection can be enough for email, browsing and light use. It becomes difficult when several people are streaming, working from home, uploading files or making video calls at the same time.
FTTC: fibre to the cabinet, copper to the home
FTTC is a hybrid connection:
- Fibre optic cable runs from the exchange to the street cabinet.
- The cabinet changes the signal.
- Copper cable carries the final stretch to your home.
- Your router connects to the phone socket or compatible broadband connection inside the property.
Openreach lists FTTC speeds of up to 76 Mbps download and up to 15 Mbps upload. Those are maximum product speeds, not a promise that every property will receive them.
The distance and condition of the copper line between the cabinet and your home matter. A short, clean line may perform well. A long line can deliver much less, and copper-based faults can still affect the service.
Ofcom also warns consumers to distinguish full fibre from part fibre. Full fibre, also called FTTP, runs fibre all the way to the premises. FTTC is part fibre because copper is still used between the cabinet and the home.
Why the label matters
A broadband advert that simply says “fibre” does not tell you enough. Before signing up, check whether the service is:
- Full fibre / FTTP: fibre all the way to your home.
- FTTC / part fibre: fibre to the cabinet, copper to your home.
- ADSL / standard copper: copper for the long route from the exchange to your home.
- Cable: a different network technology that normally uses fibre to the local area and coaxial cable for the final connection.
Ofcom has asked providers to make the underlying technology clearer because the word “fibre” has often been used for different types of network.
What Starlink changes
Starlink does not use your local telephone cabinet or the copper line to your property. A Starlink dish communicates with satellites, and the Starlink router then provides the connection inside your home.
That gives Starlink an important advantage in a copper-limited area: the performance of the old cabinet-to-home line is no longer the part carrying your internet traffic.
Starlink's published specifications say that users typically experience:
- Download speeds between 25 and 220 Mbps.
- Upload speeds between 5 and 20 Mbps.
- Land latency between 25 and 60 milliseconds.
These figures are useful for setting expectations, but they are not guaranteed speeds. Starlink says performance varies with location, time of day and service plan, and that actual speeds can be lower during busy periods.
My own Starlink results
My connection has performed better than the published typical range in the specifications above. The slowest download speed I have personally seen is around 180 Mbps, while the fastest has been approximately 428 Mbps. Upload speed has been around 25 Mbps on a lower result and has reached 50 Mbps. Latency has typically been between 19 and 30 milliseconds.
These are my own real-world results, not a promise of what every Starlink customer will receive. They show that an individual connection can perform materially faster than a published typical range, while still varying with location, network demand, weather, hardware, Wi-Fi conditions and service plan.
For a fair comparison, test Starlink and your existing broadband at different times of day, ideally over Ethernet, and record both download and upload results.
The practical comparison is therefore not “fibre versus satellite” in the abstract. It is:
What does your home receive today, and what can Starlink deliver at your exact location after installation?
Why Starlink can be the better choice
1. Your copper line is the bottleneck
If your ADSL or FTTC service is limited by a long copper run, upgrading your router will not remove the main limitation. Better Wi-Fi can improve coverage inside the house, but it cannot make a weak line from the cabinet run faster.
Starlink uses a different access route. That can make a meaningful difference where the copper last mile is the reason your speed is poor.
This is especially relevant when:
- Your download speed is regularly much lower than the package estimate.
- Your upload speed makes cloud backups, work files or video calls difficult.
- The line becomes unstable in bad weather.
- Your cabinet is a long distance away.
- Full fibre is not available and there is no clear upgrade date.
- Several people need to use the connection at once.
If you are still on ordinary ADSL, Starlink's typical upload range can also be a major improvement over the up-to-1 Mbps upload figure Openreach gives for standard copper broadband.
2. You are in a rural or hard-to-reach location
Wired network roll-out is not uniform. A home can be close enough to a town for everyday services but still be connected by an old, long copper line.
Starlink can reach homes that are awkward or expensive to connect with new terrestrial infrastructure, provided the service is available at the address and the dish can see enough of the sky.
That does not make Starlink a magic solution for every rural property. Trees, buildings, hills, rooflines and other obstructions can cause interruptions. Use the Starlink app's Check for Obstructions tool before committing to an installation.
3. You want a separate connection for resilience
A copper broadband fault and a satellite broadband fault do not normally affect the same access network.
That creates a useful option for people who work from home, run a business, rely on remote access or simply cannot afford to be offline: keep the existing wired service as a backup and use Starlink as the main connection, or do the reverse.
This is a practical inference from the two different access technologies, not a promise that either service will be available during a local power cut. Both systems need power at the property, and Starlink can also be affected by weather, obstructions or problems in the wider network.
4. You need better upload performance than a weak line can provide
Many households focus on download speed, but upload speed matters for:
- Video meetings.
- Sending large work files.
- Cloud storage and backups.
- Uploading photographs and video.
- Security cameras and remote access.
- Live streaming.
A long or poor copper line may have an upload speed that is the real reason the connection feels frustrating. Starlink can be a worthwhile alternative if its local performance is better, but test the existing line and check the current Starlink plan expectations rather than assuming the maximum.
When FTTC may still be the better choice
Starlink is not automatically the winner.
Your FTTC line is already stable and fast enough
If your FTTC connection consistently delivers what your household needs, switching may add cost and installation work without improving your experience.
A stable wired connection can also be preferable for applications that are sensitive to interruptions, latency variation or brief signal loss. Test the connection at the router with an Ethernet cable, not only over Wi-Fi.
Full fibre is available
If FTTP is available at your address, compare it before choosing Starlink. Full fibre removes the copper last mile and is usually the strongest fixed-line option for speed, consistency and future capacity.
The right question is not always “FTTC or Starlink?” It may be:
Can I move from FTTC to full fibre, and is that better value for my home than adding satellite broadband?
Check the Openreach fibre checker and your preferred provider's availability checker. Availability can differ between neighbouring properties.
Your property has serious obstructions
Starlink needs a suitable view of the sky. Starlink says trees, buildings, poles and rooflines can interrupt the connection. Trees can also become a bigger problem as branches and leaves grow.
Do not assume that placing the dish beside a window or under a tree will be good enough. Use the app's obstruction check at the proposed mounting position. If the only viable location requires unsafe roof or tower work, get professional advice.
You need the lowest possible installation complexity
FTTC normally uses existing wired infrastructure and a compatible router. Starlink adds a dish, power supply, cabling, a mounting position and an outdoor installation to plan and maintain.
The total cost is not just the monthly plan. Include the kit, mount, cable route, any professional installation, electricity and future maintenance when comparing the two options.
Your use is very sensitive to weather or interruptions
Starlink says moderate to heavy rain, snow and hail can cause momentary service degradation or dropouts. Its system is designed to be resilient, but no satellite service should be described as interruption-proof.
For critical work, a wired connection plus mobile or satellite backup may be more sensible than relying on one access method alone.

The thresholds in this table are practical prompts, not official pass-or-fail rules. Your household's workload, budget and tolerance for interruptions matter just as much as the number on a speed test.
How to test before you decide
1. Test the existing line properly
Run several tests:
- At a quiet time in the morning.
- During the evening busy period.
- With one device using the connection.
- Over Ethernet directly from the router where possible.
- From the same device and test service each time.
Record download speed, upload speed, latency and any visible packet-loss or interruption symptoms. Also note what happens when another person is streaming or uploading.
A slow Wi-Fi result is not proof that the copper line is slow. Ofcom notes that Wi-Fi, the router, device limitations and several people using the connection can all affect the result.
2. Ask the provider for the line estimate
Before cancelling, ask for:
- The estimated download and upload range.
- The minimum guaranteed speed, if your provider offers one.
- Whether the service is ADSL, FTTC, FTTP or another technology.
- Whether full fibre is planned or already available.
- The contract end date and any early termination cost.
3. Check Starlink at the actual property
Check current availability and plan details on the official Starlink website. Then use the Starlink app's obstruction tool at the exact place where the dish would be installed.
Do not compare your current measured speed with Starlink's best headline figure. Compare your current measured experience with the realistic performance range, installation requirements and total cost at your property.
Our verdict
If your home has full fibre, that is usually the first fixed-line option to investigate.
If your home has good FTTC, Starlink is not automatically an upgrade. Keep the wired connection if it is stable, affordable and fast enough for the household.
If your home has old copper broadband or a weak FTTC line, Starlink can be a very sensible alternative. Its biggest advantage is not that satellites are inherently better than cables. Its advantage is that it avoids the particular copper last mile that is limiting your home.
That is why Starlink is often most valuable in rural properties, long-line locations and homes where full fibre is unavailable. It gives you another route to the internet when the local cabinet and the copper between that cabinet and your house are the problem.
