Starlink for Boating: A Guide to Marine Connectivity & Setup
Campervans, Motorhomes & RVs · 7 September 2026
Starlink can provide an internet connection aboard a boat, but a workable setup needs more than a dish that connects at the marina. Plan the service area, secure installation, power supply and onboard Wi-Fi together. This guide is a practical preparation checklist; use our marine plan comparison when choosing a subscription.
Start with the journeys you actually make
Write down where you want service: alongside in a marina, at anchor, during coastal passages or offshore. Include countries visited and whether the equipment will operate while the vessel moves. Check those uses against the current offer in your Starlink account. A connection working at one berth does not establish that the plan covers an entire voyage.
Starlink's ocean-use guidance and in-motion guidance are the starting points for eligibility. Select your country and review the exact hardware and plan requirements before departure.
Survey the position before fitting a mount
Our recommended survey considers sky view and practical access together. Look for masts, booms, rigging and other equipment that may obstruct the intended position. Consider the boat's changing orientation rather than judging only the view while tied up.
Compare safely accessible positions before making permanent holes. Keep the equipment clear of working lines, walkways and places where people need handholds. A convenient temporary position may be unsuitable once sails, covers or other equipment are in use.
Ask a competent marine installer to assess an elevated or exposed mount. The installation should follow the requirements for the exact Starlink model and the vessel; a land-based mounting example is not a construction drawing for a boat.
Plan power and cable routing
Make a list of every powered component, including the Starlink equipment, any separate router and conversion equipment. Estimate daily energy use from measured average watts and intended hours online, then allow for other loads and losses. Avoid choosing a battery from its advertised capacity alone.
Use compatible power equipment and cables. Protect the route from crushing, sharp bends, chafing and tension at connectors. Plan deck or cabin entries with a marine installer so weather sealing and strain relief suit the location. Keep components within their specified environmental conditions rather than assuming every item in the kit has the same protection rating.
Test the connection where you will use it
Start by establishing a basic connection, then test in the cabin and at the actual work or entertainment position. If a device works close to the router but fails below deck, investigate onboard Wi-Fi before changing the satellite plan.
Run a normal call, send a representative file and check any work VPN you rely on. Record interruptions and the Starlink app's status at the same time. A brief high download result cannot establish that a long meeting will remain stable.
Keep a simple log of the position, weather, power arrangement, connected devices and any error message. This makes later troubleshooting more useful than repeated resets.
Before leaving the marina
- Confirm service permission for the route and moving-vessel use.
- Inspect the mount, cables and power connections from safe access points.
- Check data usage, charge controls and account access.
- Download essential documents for offline use.
- Test the communications alternatives you intend to carry.
- Pack the information needed to identify the kit and contact support.
Starlink is an internet service. Keep the appropriate independent navigation, distress and safety communications equipment for the voyage; do not treat a subscription upgrade as a substitute.
