Starlink Maritime vs Personal Plans: Which Suits Your Boat?

Plans, Pricing & Buying Advice · 7 September 2026

Back to Plans, Pricing & Buying Advice

Choose a Starlink boating plan by the route and permitted use first, then compare cost. The labels “Personal”, “Roam” and “Maritime” do not, by themselves, establish that a subscription covers your vessel, country and voyage.

This guide helps you compare the offer shown in your account. For the physical installation and onboard testing, read our separate Starlink boating setup guide.

Make a route and usage brief

Before comparing subscriptions, write down:

  • The account country and countries you intend to visit.
  • Whether you need service inland, in territorial waters or farther offshore.
  • Whether use will be stationary or while the vessel moves.
  • The type of vessel and any eligibility details requested by Starlink.
  • Expected days away and activities such as calls, uploads and streaming.
  • The hardware you already own or intend to buy.

This prevents a low headline monthly price from distracting from a restriction that makes the plan unsuitable.

Compare the plans offered to your account

For a Roam option, inspect the geographic limits, water-use rules and any paid option needed beyond included coverage. Do not assume that “Unlimited” means unrestricted use in every location.

If a Personal Maritime offer is available, read its vessel eligibility and permitted operating areas carefully. Do not assume that a launch video or another owner's offer applies to your account.

For a Priority or business maritime option, compare the included data, treatment after that data is consumed, additional-data charges and supported equipment. Higher network priority is not a guarantee against every interruption.

Use Starlink's ocean-use help, Ocean Mode explanation and the regional offer shown during ordering. Terms change, so this guide does not present a single worldwide price or vessel limit.

Work out the cost of a typical month away

Our comparison method is to add the recurring subscription, any usage-based charges, equipment costs and installation costs separately. Keep one-time spending distinct from monthly spending.

For a hypothetical data charge, multiply the number of billable gigabytes by the displayed price per gigabyte. For example, 20 GB at an illustrative 5 currency units per GB adds 100 currency units. These are arithmetic examples, not Starlink prices.

Ask what happens if your estimate is wrong. Identify the controls for additional data and read when a paid option takes effect and how to disable it. Check usage during the trip rather than waiting for an invoice. Streaming, cloud backups and large updates should be considered alongside work traffic.

Choose hardware separately from the subscription name

Avoid treating an old comparison between Standard and Flat High Performance as the complete current product range. Identify the exact equipment model and check current approval for your intended use.

Then compare mounting, power requirements, cable routing, environmental specifications and maintenance access. A plan does not change the physical protection of a dish or make an improvised mount suitable for a moving vessel.

Our hardware comparison helps frame the questions. Confirm the final choice against Starlink's current specifications and installation guidance.

Three practical decision examples

Mostly at a berth: compare the available marina and mobile connections as well as Starlink. Check what changes when you leave the berth.

Regular coastal cruising: verify the countries, time limits and moving-vessel conditions for the actual route. Keep a record of the offer accepted.

Long offshore passages: confirm ocean coverage, data charging and hardware suitability before departure. Plan an independent communications arrangement appropriate to the voyage.

These are planning examples, not automatic plan recommendations. A particular offer may be unavailable or unsuitable for your circumstances.

Before you change an existing plan

Check the effective date, any charge and whether returning to your old option is possible. Save the confirmation and test before relying on service away from shore. If the wording does not clearly cover your journey, ask Starlink to clarify it before committing.
