Outdoor network cable versus burial-rated cable
Installation & Setup Guides
Outdoor network cabling and Starlink's dish-to-power cabling are different parts of the installation. This checklist concerns downstream Ethernet LAN cabling. It does not authorise burying or extending a Starlink dish cable.
Specify the exposure, not just the category
Cat 6 describes transmission performance, not every environmental condition. Ask for the exact cable datasheet and installation method. A garden route can include sunlight, standing water, underground sections, indoor entries, rodents and mechanical loads; each needs an appropriate specification.
Outdoor or UV-resistant labelling alone does not establish suitability for direct burial. Conversely, a burial product still needs the protection and installation method its manufacturer requires. Belden's published cable specifications show why these details matter: suitability can include engineered-burial conditions and additional mechanical protection.
Put these questions in the quote
- What is the full cable product code and which datasheet supports the proposed route?
- Is the route in conduit, directly buried, supported above ground or a combination?
- How are water, cable entries and mechanical damage addressed?
- What local building, fire and electrical requirements apply at each entry?
- Who assesses surge protection and bonding for an inter-building copper link?
- What tests and route records will be supplied before concealment?
Do not choose an excavation depth from a generic internet article. Have buried services located and excavation planned by the appropriate professionals. Fibre may be worth discussing where a copper route creates additional electrical or distance concerns.
Keep evidence after installation
Retain photographs of the route before concealment, product labels, termination locations and test reports. Label both ends and record spare conduit capacity if provided. Test local network operation separately from satellite internet performance.
The linked cable-routing video concerns a particular Starlink cable installation. It provides routing context, not evidence of burial suitability for your LAN cable.
