The monthly service plan is only part of the decision. The equipment option affects your upfront cost, what happens if you cancel, and how much flexibility you have if Starlink is not right for your property.
Rental can reduce the initial outlay, while purchasing may make more sense if you expect long-term use. Neither is automatically better.
When rental can be useful
Rental may suit you when you want to try Starlink without committing to ownership, need a temporary connection, or are unsure whether your property can achieve a clear sky view. Check who pays for return shipping, the condition expected on return, and whether accessories are included.
Keep all original equipment, packaging and records in a safe place while you decide whether to continue.

When buying may be better
Buying can suit longer-term users who want certainty over equipment ownership or expect to change plan later. Compare the true total cost, not only the first month. Include hardware, shipping, mounts, cable-routing work and any optional accessories.
Protect either type of equipment
Whether rented or owned, install the dish securely, route the cable safely and avoid unauthorised alterations. Weather-resistant equipment still needs a proper mount. Damage, loss or missing items can affect the outcome when rental equipment is returned.

Compare rental and purchase over the same period
Our comparison method is to choose a realistic ownership period, then write two complete totals. For purchase, include the equipment, delivery, installation and service charges. For rental, include any initial charge, recurring equipment charge, installation and service charges shown in the offer.
For a hypothetical example, equipment costing 300 currency units to buy versus 15 per month to rent reaches the same equipment cost after 20 months. That calculation assumes all other costs are equal. It excludes changes in price, returns, damage charges and any resale value; it is not a Starlink quote.
If the rental equipment charge is bundled into service, compare the complete offers instead of inventing a separate rental fee. Record the date and country of each quote.
Think about leaving as well as joining
Read the return instructions before disposing of packaging. Keep a checklist of the supplied items and store order records with photographs of the equipment. If you expect to move, check whether the exact offer fits that plan rather than assuming ownership and portability are the same thing.

A useful decision record
