Should You Buy Starlink in the USA? A Practical Buying Guide

Plans, Pricing & Buying Advice

Independent US buying guide. Starlink Tips is not affiliated with Starlink or SpaceX. I am a Starlink customer in the UK; the US plan and checkout details below should be confirmed for your own address. If you order through my referral link, I may receive a referral reward.

Thinking about Starlink in the United States?

Starlink can be a strong choice when cable or fiber does not reach your address, your existing connection is unreliable, or you need internet while traveling. It is not automatically the best choice for every household. Before ordering, compare the complete cost and everyday performance with the wired and mobile broadband options actually available where you live.

Start with your address, not a national headline price

Enter your service address on Starlink's official US site. Review the plans, equipment, shipping, taxes, any installation offer, and the referral benefit displayed for that address. A plan or hardware promotion advertised in one location may not be available in another. Our pricing page lets you select the United States to browse current published plan information, but the address-specific checkout is the final source for your order.

Write down the total you would pay up front and over the first year. Include the monthly service charge, hardware or rental terms, shipping, installation or mount, and electricity. Compare that total with a local fiber, cable, fixed wireless, or cellular offer over the same period.

Choose the service that fits how you will use it

  • Residential: Begin here for a fixed home address. Check which speed tier and equipment offer Starlink shows at your address, then decide based on the work your household actually does. A faster plan is valuable only if you need the capacity and your local conditions support it.
  • Roam: Consider this if you intend to take the equipment between locations. Check the current data allowance, pause or standby options, in-motion rules, and geographic limits for the plan offered to you. Do not assume a Roam plan is equivalent to a fixed home plan.
  • Business or backup: If internet downtime would stop your work, compare the relevant business terms and consider a separate backup connection. No single provider can promise uninterrupted service.

The Residential versus Roam answer helps frame the choice. Verify the current terms on Starlink's US checkout before committing.

Check your sky view before you buy

A clear outdoor view matters more than an impressive speed-test screenshot from someone else's house. Use the obstruction checker in the official Starlink app at the place where the dish could actually be installed. Test realistic positions such as a yard, wall, roof, or pole while allowing for trees, neighboring buildings, safe cable routing, and local mounting rules. If you rent, obtain any permission needed before planning a permanent installation.

Our dish placement guide explains the trade-offs. An open sky view reduces avoidable interruptions, but performance still varies by location, plan, network demand, and your own Wi-Fi setup.

Match the kit to the job

For a home installation, compare the equipment Starlink offers at your address and the mounting options it supports. For portable use, consider size, power source, weather exposure, and where you will put the kit at each stop. The Mini versus Standard answer covers the practical differences. Check the exact kit generation and accessories before buying a mount or cable from another seller.

If you are installing a dish yourself, plan a secure mount, safe cable route, weather protection, and power supply. Use an installer for work beyond your skills, particularly roof or electrical work. Ask for a written quote describing the mount, cable route, weather sealing, and what will be tested before the installer leaves.

What my own experience can and cannot tell you

At my UK rural property, Starlink Residential Max has produced a recorded result of 359 Mbps download, 43 Mbps upload, and 19 ms latency with an unobstructed installation. That is a real example from one location, not a US speed promise. Your result may be higher or lower. I use the service because it solved a specific fixed-line broadband problem at my property; your comparison should begin with the alternatives at yours.

If your current fiber or cable service is fast and dependable, replacing it may save neither time nor money. Starlink may still make sense as portable internet or a separate backup, but compare the ongoing cost with how often you would use it.

A five-minute decision checklist

  1. Check Starlink availability and the complete US checkout quote for your address.
  2. Test the proposed dish location with the official app's obstruction tool.
  3. Compare a full year's cost with your best local wired or cellular option.
  4. Choose fixed Residential service or a travel-oriented Roam plan based on actual use.
  5. Confirm the referral benefit appears in your Starlink checkout before completing the order.

US pricing and offers checked — 1 October 2026

United States was explicitly selected on Starlink's rendered pages and US dollar prices were confirmed. Advertised monthly starting prices are $55 for Residential 100 Mbps, $85 for Residential 200 Mbps and $130 for Residential Max. Roam starts at $55 for 100GB, $80 for 300GB and $175 for Unlimited per month. Residential 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps are offered only in selected areas. Source: Starlink US service plans. Check the selected country if a previous regional preference is retained.

The US Residential page advertises no upfront hardware cost in selected areas and free professional home installation with Residential 200 Mbps and Max. Confirm hardware rental or purchase terms, installation scope, delivery, taxes and any additional charges in the offer for your address. These are public advertised offers, not a personalized quote. A standalone US Roam hardware price was not verified in this check; obtain it from the current checkout rather than assuming a kit price or converting a UK offer.
