Straight answers to the questions readers ask most often.

Is Starlink worth it if my rural broadband is slow?

Starlink is worth considering when your existing broadband struggles with everyday tasks and you can install the dish with a suitable view of the sky. The right comparison is your actual experience at home, rather than somebody else's best speed-test result.

Before buying, make these checks:

  • Identify the real problem. Test beside the router and, where supported, over Ethernet. If only distant rooms are slow, improving Wi-Fi may solve the problem without changing internet provider.
  • List what needs to improve. Include video meetings, uploads, streaming and simultaneous users. A faster download number alone does not establish that a connection meets those needs.
  • Compare available alternatives. Obtain address-specific offers for wired broadband and mobile broadband as well as Starlink. Compare installation and recurring costs over the same period.
  • Check the outdoor location. Starlink's installation guide requires an open sky view and recommends the app's obstruction tool.
  • Budget for the complete setup. Include equipment, mounting, cable routing, any installation work and electricity.

Our practical recommendation is to test a new connection with your normal household workload before cancelling an existing service. Keep a second connection if losing internet would seriously disrupt your work.
