How to Clean a Starlink Dish Safely

Clean your Starlink dish without damaging it

A Starlink dish normally needs very little care. Dust, pollen, mud, bird debris, wet leaves, snow or ice can still cover part of the antenna and make troubleshooting harder. Clean it only when there is visible buildup or a clear change in performance.

This guide is model-agnostic. Use the instructions for your exact kit if they differ, and never climb onto a roof or other unsafe surface to reach the dish.

Before you start

Have these items ready:

  • A clean microfiber cloth
  • Clean, lukewarm water
  • A soft, non-abrasive brush for loose debris
  • A dry cloth for the cable and connector area

Choose a dry, calm time and work from ground level whenever possible. If the dish is on a roof, tall pole or awkward mount, have a qualified person clean it instead.

Do not use:

  • A pressure washer, hose jet or compressed-air blast
  • Glass cleaner, solvents, bleach, detergent or abrasive paste
  • Scouring pads, metal tools or a scraper
  • Hot water on snow or ice
  • A ladder positioned near power lines or an unstable surface

Do not open the dish or router. Do not pull on the cable, twist the connector or move the dish to make cleaning easier.

Step-by-step cleaning

1. Check the connection first

Open the Starlink app and note the current status, alerts and any obstruction information. This gives you a useful before-and-after comparison.

If you will touch the dish, cable or connector, stop service and disconnect power using the normal shutdown process for your kit. Keep water away from every connector. Never disconnect a wet connector.

2. Remove loose material gently

From a safe position, use your hand or a soft brush to lift away leaves, loose dirt and other debris. Use light strokes and let the material fall away. Do not drag grit across the surface, and do not chip at anything that is frozen to the dish.

If you cannot reach the whole surface without stretching, climbing or leaning, stop and arrange professional help.

3. Wipe with a damp microfiber cloth

Dampen the cloth with clean, lukewarm water and wring it out so it is damp rather than dripping. Wipe with light pressure in overlapping passes. Rinse or replace the cloth when it picks up grit.

For a stuck mark, hold the damp cloth over the area briefly and then wipe again. Repeat rather than scrubbing. If the mark will not lift, leave it in place and ask Starlink support or an installer for advice.

4. Keep the cable and connector area dry

Wipe the exposed cable only with a nearly dry cloth. Do not spray the connector, pour water around the cable entry point or use a tool to clean inside a socket.

While the area is accessible, look for cuts, crushed sections, loose fittings or signs that water has entered the connection. Do not try to repair a damaged cable with tape or sealant unless the kit instructions specifically call for it.

5. Let everything dry before restarting

Allow the dish, cable and connector area to dry fully. Reconnect power only when the connection is dry and undisturbed. Let the dish complete its normal startup, then check the app for status, alerts and obstruction changes.

Run the same simple speed or video-call check you used before cleaning. A clean dish will not fix congestion, a damaged cable, a poor Wi-Fi location or a service outage.

Snow and ice

Compatible Starlink hardware may have a snow-melt setting. If your app provides that control, use it as directed instead of scraping the dish.

Never pour hot water over the antenna, hammer ice, use a sharp tool or cover the dish with a blanket or tarp. Those actions can damage the surface, create a fall hazard or interfere with the antenna's view of the sky.

Clear snow from the ground and access path only when you can do so safely. Do not climb onto a roof or reach across an unsafe mount. If heavy ice remains, wait for safer conditions or call a professional.

When cleaning is not the answer

If the connection is still poor after the dish is clean and dry, work through these checks:

  1. Check the Starlink app for an outage, alert or obstruction change.
  2. Inspect the visible cable path without moving the dish.
  3. Test one device close to the router to separate Wi-Fi coverage from the Starlink link.
  4. Compare performance at another time of day to identify congestion.
  5. Contact Starlink support with the app status, approximate start time and any photos of visible damage.

A dish that is cracked, loose, water-damaged or difficult to reach should be left alone until a qualified installer or Starlink support advises you.

Quick cleaning checklist

  • [ ] Work from a safe, stable position
  • [ ] Use only clean water and a soft microfiber cloth
  • [ ] Lift loose debris instead of scrubbing
  • [ ] Keep every connector dry
  • [ ] Never scrape ice or use hot water
  • [ ] Let the hardware dry before restoring power
  • [ ] Recheck the app after cleaning
