SIM and eSIM compatibility for a backup modem

A SIM working in a phone does not prove it will work in a backup router. Confirm the exact modem, carrier and plan combination before relying on it during a Starlink outage.

Hardware checks

Record the device model, regional variant and hardware revision. Check the manufacturer's supported mobile bands and the carrier's device-eligibility process. Ask whether the device is carrier-locked. A familiar model name can cover variants with different capabilities.

For a physical SIM, confirm the required card size and installation method. For eSIM, confirm that your particular order code supports downloadable profiles and that the chosen provider supports that device. Do not assume a phone QR-code activation flow is also supported by a router.

Teltonika's RUTX50 documentation is a useful example: feature availability varies by order code. It is a reason to check the exact unit, not a claim that every router has the same eSIM implementation.

Plan and configuration checks

Ask the carrier whether the plan permits router use, tethering, the intended country and any roaming. Confirm data limits and the behaviour after the allowance is used. Keep those answers with the backup plan.

Use the provider's documented APN and authentication settings. Some routers offer automatic APN selection, but an automatic setting is not proof that the correct plan configuration was chosen. Teltonika documents both automatic and custom APN configuration for supported devices.

Do not publish SIM identifiers, activation QR codes, account credentials or private APN authentication details in a community question.

Activate and test before an outage

Complete activation while another internet connection is available. Verify registration, browsing, upload and the intended work applications. Test the router interface used for failover, then test a planned switch and return to Starlink.

Check the plan remains active between tests. A dormant or expired SIM can turn a carefully installed backup into a surprise failure. Record a support contact that can be reached without depending on the failed connection.
