Moving Starlink to a New Address? A Service-Location Checklist

Moving a Starlink kit to another home is not the same as taking it on a short trip. On a Residential plan, the service address on your account determines where the service is intended to operate. Changing that address disables service at the previous location, so check the new location before you make the change.

This checklist is for a permanent move within the same country. Roam and Maritime plans follow different rules.

Before changing the address

1. Confirm which subscription you are changing

If your account has more than one Starlink kit or service line, identify the exact subscription you are moving. Starlink allows one kit's service address to be changed without changing the addresses of other kits.

Also check whether you are on a Residential, Roam, Maritime, or another plan. The standard service-address instructions do not apply to Roam and Maritime in the same way. Do not change a Residential service address just to take the dish on a weekend trip.

2. Check the new location first

Before opening your account settings:

  1. Check the new address on the Starlink availability map.
  2. Confirm that the address is in the same country as the country on your account.
  3. Check the plan and price shown for the new location.
  4. If the map or checkout flow shows a waitlist, capacity warning, or no active service, do not assume the address change will succeed.

A new location can be unavailable or at capacity even when the old location works normally. If you need temporary connectivity rather than a permanent move, compare the current Roam options instead of changing a Residential address.

3. Record your current setup

Before disconnecting the kit, take a few photos and notes:

  • The dish and router cable connections.
  • Your router name and Wi-Fi password.
  • Any mount, cable clips, or weatherproofing that will be moved.
  • Whether you use a third-party router or bypass mode.
  • Any devices that use fixed network settings.

This gives you a recovery reference if the new setup does not come back exactly as expected.

Change the service address

Starlink's labels can vary slightly by account and app version, but the current paths are:

On the Starlink website

  1. Sign in to your Starlink account.
  2. Open Subscriptions and select the subscription you are moving.
  3. In Service Location, select Edit.
  4. Enter the new service address.
  5. Review the location and save the change.

In the Starlink app

  1. Open the Starlink app.
  2. Open the menu in the top-left corner.
  3. Select Manage Subscription.
  4. Open Service Location.
  5. Choose your current location or enter the new address manually.
  6. Select Set Service Address.

Do not confuse the service address with your account's default shipping address. Changing shipping details does not move the service line.

What happens after you save

Expect the following:

  • Service at the previous address is disabled.
  • The new address may take around 15 to 30 minutes to appear across your account.
  • The new location must be eligible for the service and plan you selected.
  • In the United States or Canada, a move can affect regional pricing or savings eligibility.
  • Returning to the old address may not be possible after the change.

Do not repeatedly submit the address form while the account is updating. Wait, refresh the account, and check the selected subscription before trying again.

Move and reconnect the hardware

Once the account shows the new service location:

  1. Power down the dish and router normally.
  2. Pack the dish, router, power supply, and cables so connectors cannot be bent or crushed.
  3. At the new address, place the dish where it has the clearest practical view of the sky.
  4. Reconnect the Starlink cable and router firmly, without forcing the plugs.
  5. Restore power and wait for the system to boot.
  6. Open the Starlink app and check the connection status, alerts, and obstruction view.
  7. Test one phone or laptop first, then test the devices you rely on most.

If you use a third-party router, reconnect it to the same WAN path you used before. If you changed cabling or router mode during the move, troubleshoot the Starlink connection by itself before adding switches, mesh nodes, or other equipment.

If the address change fails

A failed change usually means one of three things:

  • The new location is at capacity or not active yet. Recheck the availability map and the address spelling. A waitlist or future service date is different from an app error.
  • The app is out of date or the account page is stuck. Update the app, then try the website in a browser. Give the account time to finish any pending change.
  • You are moving across a country boundary. The normal address edit is not a cross-border move. Starlink's transfer process can remove the kit from the old account and require activation under a new account in the new country.

If the new address is accepted but the service remains offline after the account has updated, check power, cables, sky view, and app alerts. Keep a screenshot of the address confirmation and the exact error message before contacting support.

Final move checklist

  • [ ] The correct subscription shows the new service address.
  • [ ] You confirmed the new location was eligible before changing the account.
  • [ ] You waited for the account update before reconnecting the kit.
  • [ ] The dish has a clear practical sky view at the new site.
  • [ ] The app shows the system online with no new critical alert.
  • [ ] Your main phone, laptop, and work or security devices can connect.
  • [ ] You checked the plan, price, and any regional savings after the move.
  • [ ] You did not change the address merely for short-term travel.

For the current menu paths and eligibility rules, see Starlink's official service-address help article. For a sale or handover to another person, use Starlink's separate hardware ownership transfer guidance instead of changing your own service address.
