AfriForum challenged racist criteria, which are blocking Starlink in SA, at ICASA public hearings
In September 2024, AfriForum submitted written comments to the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) to call on ICASA to drop its strict race criteria that was blocking a South African license to the satellite internet service Starlink. In February 2025 AfriForum again participated in public hearings that were held by ICASA on the proposed new licensing framework for satellite services. In his verbal presentation, Ernst van Zyl focused on the benefits that farmers and rural communities stand to gain from getting access to Starlink. He also outlined why it is unjustifiable to block these potential benefits on racial grounds.
