How to Cancel Starlink and Return Your Kit: A No-Surprises Checklist

Plans, Pricing & Buying Advice

Back to Plans, Pricing & Buying Advice

Canceling Starlink is straightforward, but cancellation, a plan change and a hardware return are separate decisions. Use this checklist to stop future billing, keep service available until the date you have paid for, return an eligible kit with a usable paper trail, and avoid packing mistakes.

Before you cancel

Gather these details before opening the cancellation screen:

  • The email address on the Starlink account.
  • The service line or subscription you intend to cancel.
  • Your next billing date and the date shown for the current paid period.
  • The order number, kit serial number and any return or purchase emails.
  • A list of accessories that came with the kit.
  • Photos of the dish, router, power supply, cables and accessories before packing.
  • A backup internet connection if anyone still needs to work, call or monitor the property.

Do not assume that pausing, changing plans or moving a service address is the same as canceling. Read the confirmation screen and check whether it says the service will end, a future plan change will be removed, or the next invoice will be stopped.

Step 1: Check the billing date

Starlink says subscription billing is tied to UTC. Make a cancellation or plan-change request before 00:00 UTC on your billing day if you want to avoid the next billing cycle. Your exact account screen and local terms take priority, so save the date shown in the confirmation.

Cancellation normally leaves the service active through the period already paid for. It removes the service from future billing rather than turning off the connection immediately. If you still need the connection for a few days, download important invoices and complete any account or device changes before the paid period ends.

If the cancellation is accidental and the account still shows a resume option, check the date and terms before resuming. Reactivation may depend on availability and capacity at the service address.

Step 2: Cancel the service

Starlink's current website path is:

  1. Sign in to your Starlink account.
  2. Open the account Home page and select Your Subscription.
  3. Select Manage beside the relevant service plan.
  4. Choose Cancel Service.
  5. Read the end date, billing message and any hardware-return option.
  6. Confirm the cancellation.
  7. Save the confirmation page or email.

If you have more than one service line, verify the address, plan and kit before confirming. A cancellation on the wrong line can interrupt a second property, a vehicle or a backup connection.

To cancel an upcoming plan change instead of ending service, open Manage, choose Change Plan, then use the option to cancel the upcoming change. Confirm that the subscription still shows the plan you intend to keep.

Step 3: Decide whether the kit must be returned

The return choice depends on how the kit was obtained, your market and the order's eligibility.

  • Purchased kit: Starlink's published terms generally allow an eligible, undamaged, untampered and unmodified kit and accessories to be returned within 30 days of the Payment Due Date for a hardware refund. Check the terms attached to your account and order.
  • Rented kit: Starlink says a rented kit must be returned in good condition within 30 days of service cancellation. If it is not returned on time, the account may be charged the kit's full retail price.
  • No return option: If the account does not show a hardware-return checkbox, the order may not be eligible through that flow. Do not send the kit to an address found in an old email or guess a warehouse address. Check the order details or contact Starlink Support.

When the account offers it, select I would like to return my hardware during the cancellation flow. A prepaid label should be sent by email. Search for the subject Your Starlink Return and check spam or junk folders. Starlink says the label can also be re-downloaded on desktop from the Order Summary page beside the return entry; that download may not be available in the app.

Step 4: Pack the kit carefully

Return the equipment that belongs to the order, using the original packaging if it is still safe and usable:

  1. Power down the system normally and disconnect every cable.
  2. Photograph the serial label and the complete kit before packing.
  3. Include the dish, router, power supply, cables, adapters and listed accessories requested by the return instructions.
  4. Protect the dish face and connector ends from impact, moisture and loose objects.
  5. Put small accessories in a sealed bag so they cannot move around the box.
  6. Remove personal labels, handwritten Wi-Fi details and unrelated hardware.
  7. Close the box securely and attach the prepaid label without covering the tracking barcode.
  8. Keep the drop-off receipt and tracking number.

Do not factory-reset equipment as a substitute for canceling the subscription. A reset does not stop billing or start a return. Do not modify, paint, cut, drill or permanently mount hardware before returning it if you may need a refund or rental inspection.

Step 5: Prove the return was completed

After handing over the parcel:

  • Save the carrier receipt and tracking number.
  • Keep the cancellation confirmation, return email and order number together.
  • Watch for delivery and inspection updates.
  • Check the Starlink account and next statement for the service end date.
  • Do not discard the tracking record until the return and any refund or rental charge are resolved.

Starlink's Help Center says refund initiation can take up to two weeks after the returned kit is received and inspected. The payment provider may take longer to show the credit. If tracking shows delivery but the account still shows an open return after the stated processing period, contact support with the order number, tracking number, photos and receipt.

If you are only moving or changing plans

Do not cancel a working service just to move the dish to another property or switch plans. First check whether your account supports a service-address move or plan change. A cancellation can remove the line from future billing, and reactivation may not be immediate if capacity has changed.

If the kit is rented, moving or changing the service without following the account's instructions can leave the rental obligation active. Read the confirmation for the specific service line rather than relying on a general cancellation email.

Common mistakes

  • Canceling after the billing cutoff. The next invoice may already be generated. Check the account's UTC billing date before waiting.
  • Assuming cancellation means an immediate shutdown. Service can remain available through the paid period.
  • Returning a rented kit without canceling. The return and subscription actions may be separate.
  • Sending back the wrong equipment. Match the serial number and accessories to the correct order.
  • Using an old label. Generate or download the label from the current return flow.
  • Leaving personal data on the box. Remove Wi-Fi passwords, labels and paperwork that are not part of the return.
  • Throwing away the receipt. A tracking number is your evidence if the parcel is delayed or mis-scanned.
  • Expecting a refund outside the window. Eligibility depends on the order, market and condition; confirm the current terms before shipping.

Quick cancellation and return checklist

Before you close the box, confirm:

  • The correct service line and billing date were checked.
  • Cancellation was confirmed before the next billing cutoff where possible.
  • The paid-through date and service end date were saved.
  • The account's hardware-return option was used when eligible.
  • The return label came from the current Starlink account or return email.
  • The kit and accessories match the order and are in good condition.
  • Photos, the drop-off receipt and tracking number are stored.
  • The account and payment statement will be checked after delivery and inspection.
