The advertised Starlink price is not always the complete cost of getting a reliable connection. The kit and monthly service are only the starting point. Your final budget may also include a permanent mount, cable protection, Wi-Fi improvements, electricity and installation work.

1. A Permanent Mount
The stand included with some kits is useful for testing or temporary ground-level placement, but many homes need the dish mounted higher to obtain a clear view of the sky.
Possible extra costs include:
- wall or roof brackets;
- a pole or mast;
- a suitable pipe adaptor;
- bracing or tension wires;
- weather-resistant fixings;
- professional installation;
- safe access equipment.
The correct installation depends on the property. A short wall mount on a sheltered bungalow is very different from a tall mast on an exposed building. Do not choose fixings solely by price: movement can interrupt service, and an unsafe installation can damage property or injure someone.
My £120 Mast Setup
My installation used:
- one 6-metre scaffold pole;
- three tension wires;
- four wall brackets;
- one base plate.
All parts were bought from Amazon and delivered to me for approximately £120 in total. The result is extremely rigid, with no noticeable movement or wobble.
This is an example of what worked on my property—not a universal specification. Tall masts, roof work and exposed locations may require a competent installer or structural advice.
2. Cable Routing and Protection
Before ordering accessories, measure the complete route from the dish to the indoor equipment. Include bends, safe fixing points, the building entry and enough slack to avoid pulling on connectors.
You may need:
- a longer compatible Starlink cable;
- external cable clips or supports;
- UV-resistant conduit or trunking;
- a wall-entry cover;
- sealant appropriate for the building;
- protective sleeving in areas vulnerable to animals or accidental damage.
Avoid crushing the cable, making tight bends or placing tension on the connectors. Do not cut or modify a proprietary Starlink cable unless the method is supported for your exact hardware and you understand the consequences.
3. Wi-Fi and Ethernet Extras
A fast satellite connection can still feel slow if the router is badly positioned or the property has thick walls.
Depending on the Starlink generation and your needs, extra networking costs might include:
- an Ethernet adaptor;
- compatible Ethernet cables;
- an unmanaged network switch;
- one or more mesh Wi-Fi units;
- a third-party router;
- professional network installation.
Do not buy networking equipment automatically. Test the supplied router first, using the Starlink app and speed tests in the rooms that matter. Only spend money where coverage or wired connectivity is genuinely inadequate.
4. Electricity
Starlink operates continuously unless you switch it off. Power consumption varies with the hardware, software, network activity, temperature and snow-melt behaviour.
My own Starlink statistics showed an average draw of 28 W during the measured period. If it averaged 28 W all day, the calculation would be:
- 0.028 kW × 24 hours = 0.672 kWh per day
- approximately 20.4 kWh per month
- at an example electricity rate of 25p per kWh: approximately £5.10 per month
This is an illustration, not a guaranteed running cost. Use the average power figure from your own Starlink app and multiply it by your electricity tariff.
Snow-melt operation can increase demand. That matters particularly for batteries, solar systems and portable power stations, where capacity and inverter losses must also be considered.
5. Backup Power
If Starlink is essential for work, security systems or communication, you may want protection against short power cuts.
Possible additions include:
- a suitable uninterruptible power supply;
- a surge-protection solution selected for the installation;
- a portable power station;
- solar panels and a charge controller;
- additional battery capacity;
- a backup mobile connection.
Check that any UPS or power station can handle the actual equipment load and provides the correct output. Battery manufacturers often advertise capacity in watt-hours; usable runtime will be lower after conversion losses and safety reserves.
6. Professional Installation
A straightforward ground-level test may cost nothing beyond the kit, but permanent installation can require a professional.
Consider qualified help when:
- roof access is needed;
- the mast is tall or highly exposed;
- fixings enter an unusual or fragile structure;
- cables pass near electrical services;
- grounding or lightning protection needs assessment;
- you cannot safely inspect and maintain the installation.
Ask what is included in a quotation: mount, fixings, cable route, weather sealing, testing, travel and any return visit.
7. Replacement and Maintenance Costs
Allow for the possibility of later spending on:
- damaged cables;
- replacement mounts or corroded fixings;
- tree work when seasonal growth creates obstructions;
- networking upgrades;
- moving the installation;
- accidental damage outside warranty coverage.
Inspect the installation from a safe position after severe weather. Finding a loose cable clip early is cheaper than repairing a damaged cable or water entry later.
