Make the first test somewhere convenient
If possible, complete your first setup where another internet connection is available. Keep a record of what works and pack the correct equipment afterwards.
Check the intended service country, location and kit status. A used kit still assigned to another account creates a different problem from weak mobile coverage.
Prepare your account and paperwork
Download the official app before leaving. Confirm that you can sign in and access the verification method you use. Keep identifiers and purchase records privately, not in public screenshots.
If your payment provider requires approval through another app or message, plan how you will complete it. Do not rely on an untested activation process as your only way to contact someone.
What Starlink currently says
Official activation guidance describes one hour of initial internet access for a new retail kit, intended to let the customer complete activation. It directs users to another internet source if that access is exhausted.
A separate account FAQ says inactive equipment can still provide a path to activate or reactivate. This is not a promise of general browsing, third-party payment access or a working order for every account.
At the destination
Set up the correct hardware in a safe position using its official instructions. Use the app's obstruction check and wait for the equipment status to update.
Follow the activation or reactivation route actually offered. Read the price and conditions before confirming a paid plan. Do not repeatedly submit orders when a page is slow; check the account result before trying again.
If you cannot complete a verification or payment step, use the backup connection you planned. Do not pay an unofficial intermediary to unlock an account.
Test before relying on the connection
Once the account shows active service, test an ordinary website and the application you need. Confirm that other devices can connect as expected.
A setup that works for casual browsing is not automatically a tested emergency communications system. Keep independent arrangements for urgent help when travelling remotely.
